Edge magazine has published a 16-page GTA 6 cover story based on a visit to Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Edge reports that Rob Nelson, the studio’s co-studio head and head of development, played the current build live for about 90 minutes, with no script. Edge 430 went on sale on October 29, 2026, and GamesRadar+ put the full feature online for free the same day. Everything below is Edge’s account of the demo and what Rockstar’s developers told it.
On scale, Edge says the map is about twice as big as GTA 5’s. It reports Rockstar’s claim that all the land in the game, Vice City and everything around it, comes close to the playable maps of GTA 5, GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption 2 put together. Aaron Garbut, also a co-studio head, told Edge the game has "an order of magnitude more interiors" than its predecessors.
Edge reports that Rockstar set up a Los Angeles team to make pedestrians more individual. It says each pedestrian was individually art-directed, backed by around 600,000 animations, and given traits like temperament and aggression that shape how they react. In one scene, Edge says a man let his dog loose on Jason after Nelson had Jason stare at him too long.
A new Criminal Profile rates how Jason and Lucia behave, running from Professional at one end to Irredeemable at the other, with angel and devil icons. Edge says Rockstar told it the profile will influence how their story unfolds. A four-point scale tracks how close the couple are, and it typically rises as they spend time together, such as walking on the beach, cycling or going to the gym. Edge adds that Nelson would not confirm or deny whether they can marry.
Edge describes the heat system as a record of what police know about you: your description, whether you were alone or with a partner, your clothes, CCTV footage and your weapon, shown as icons. According to Edge, splitting from your partner, changing clothes or dropping the weapon removes a piece of that evidence.
Edge also describes "natural gating" between story missions. In earlier games, it says, finishing one mission often brought a call to the next almost at once. GTA 6, it says, builds in pauses and downtime between missions. At times the couple have to raise cash before they can secure the next job, and Edge’s examples include robbing a gas station or a jewellery store, or stealing a particular car that a fence wants.
Nelson told Edge that GTA 5’s wide roads were narrowed to a "more believable size". Edge adds that the day-night cycle is now substantially longer. Edge reports fully working bus and train systems. Phil Hooker, another head of development, said he has memorised all of the bus routes.
Edge says Nelson led a small group to Miami in 2015 to scout ideas for a return to Vice City, while Red Dead Redemption 2 was still in production.
GamesRadar+ calls the feature’s screenshots "bespoke", and the feature credits its images to Rockstar Games. We have not seen Rockstar post them on its own site. These are Edge’s descriptions, not a Rockstar announcement, and we have not seen the build ourselves. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
