Rockstar has said far more about how Leonida’s people behave than about the technology behind them. In August 2026 interviews and previews, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson described pedestrians who notice eavesdroppers and back away from a drawn gun, a Wanted system that starts only when someone witnesses a crime or an alarm sounds, and police who remember your face, clothes, car and partner; footage shows the meter now reaches six stars. On the technology side, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in February 2026 that generative AI has “zero part” in GTA 6, Nelson reportedly said the same, and Rockstar reportedly told The New York Times the game has more than 600,000 NPC animations. Take-Two patents on NPC navigation and animation exist, but nobody has confirmed they are in the game.

De Rockstar· Rockstar North demo and interviews: IGN (August 2026) and TGG (reported by Dexerto, August 2026)

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, told IGN that GTA 6’s Wanted system only passes a crime to the police when someone sees it or an alarm goes off, and that police dispatch is “extremely specific” about what it knows. He gave YouTuber TGG an everyday example, as Dexerto reported: drag a driver out of their car and they will call the cops, so it can be smarter to break into a parked car where nobody is watching.

  3. Changer d’apparence pour semer la police

Rapporté· Rockstar North demo, reported by IGN and Kotaku

  4. Police remember you and keep searching

De Rockstar· Rockstar North demo and interviews (IGN, TGG); An Extended Look

Nelson told YouTuber TGG that Rockstar wanted to end the old pattern where you lose the cops and they forget you at once, giving police “a bit more persistent memory”, as GamesRadar+ reported. In IGN’s demo he pointed to a “hot area” on the map where officers would keep hanging around for a while, and said you could let it cool off, swap outfits or split Jason and Lucia up. Push Square notes that because officers hold your description, they can spot you again later even after you have outrun them.

De Rockstar· Rockstar North demo and interview, reported by IGN

Nelson told IGN that one star is not too hard to shake, but that with three stars in the city a getaway by car can be tough unless you are on a sports bike or in something very quick. His advice was to get off the streets and run into the alleys, and he said Rockstar worked hard to make running, jumping out of cars and climbing fences feel smooth for this kind of escape.

  6. Police are off the minimap; Focus picks them out

De Rockstar· Rob Nelson interview with TGG; An Extended Look; Rockstar North demo

Police no longer show up on the radar during a chase. Nelson told YouTuber TGG, as GamesRadar+ reported, that “they show up when you use Focus”, and that escaping can be harder but more fun because you have to think more. Push Square saw the change in An Extended Look, and IGN describes Focus as a way to find useful items and avoid police.

  7. Some cars call the police on you

  8. Police can be waiting outside a robbery

    Rapporté· Rockstar North demo

Only IGN reports this: if a robbery drags on, police can build up outside the shop or bank and be ready when you leave, although many targets have another way out, such as a back door. IGN presents it as a trade-off between getting out fast and taking time to find more loot.

  9. Security cameras and what they record

  10. The Wanted meter goes up to six stars

This is not confirmed. A popular fan idea is that NPCs who film your crimes will post the clips online or pass them to the police. Rockstar has said witnesses and alarms trigger the Wanted system, and previews mention CCTV, but no Rockstar statement or preview we found says bystanders’ phone footage plays any part. IGN floated the idea in its Wanted system explainer, but only as speculation.

Comment les gens réagissent à vous

  1. Pedestrians react to a gun in your hand

De Rockstar· Rob Nelson interview with TGG (reported September 2026); An Extended Look; Dazed feature (August 2026)

Nelson told YouTuber TGG that GTA 5’s habit of letting you pull out a shotgun in front of people with no reaction “doesn’t work here”, as Dexerto and GamesRadar+ reported. He said you can always carry two concealed handguns and that a long gun on your back should be fine, but people who see one in your hand dislike it, react and start moving away. GamesRadar+ spotted two bystanders quietly walking off when Lucia masks up and draws a gun in An Extended Look, and Dazed’s August feature says the city will respond if you walk down the street with a rifle.

    Sources : Dexerto · GamesRadar+ · GamesRadar+ (2) · Dazed · Kotaku

  2. People notice eavesdroppers and followers

De Rockstar· Rockstar North interview, reported by IGN

You can stop and listen to NPC conversations, but Nelson told IGN that standing too close to a group should get you noticed, often with an “Oh hey, can I help you?” Following someone too closely for too long has the same effect, and they may then turn aggressive or simply try to get away. He said the idea began on Red Dead Redemption 2 and was scaled up for a crowded modern city.

    Sources : IGN · IGN (2) · Kotaku · GamesRadar+

With your gun put away, holding the left trigger no longer aims at people; it brings up a small menu of interactions, a Red Dead Redemption 2 system that Push Square, Kotaku and GamesRadar+ all spotted in An Extended Look. IGN says greet and taunt are the opening options, with defuse and provoke offered when someone turns aggressive. GamesRadar+ saw Jason offered the choice to praise, scold, pet or study a dog.

  4. You are not the only dangerous person

De Rockstar· Rockstar North demo and interviews, reported by IGN

Nelson told IGN that earlier games left you overpowered next to everyone except the police, whereas Leonida has people with “impulses of their own” who act on them: you are no longer the only person who is armed or willing to turn violent. In IGN’s preview he added that in past games everyone ran in terror once you acted up, and that GTA 6’s world is not like that. IGN’s demo included a run-in with a group of joggers who turned out to be ready to shoot.

    Sources : IGN · IGN (2) · IGN (3)

  5. Shopkeepers and bystanders fight back

Vu dans les images· An Extended Look

Robberies in An Extended Look do not always go to plan. Dexerto notes shop owners shooting back, and GamesRadar+ says ordinary people can turn vigilante when you hold up shops and gas stations. GamesRadar+ also points to a woman armed with hammers confronting the pair.

    Sources : Dexerto · GamesRadar+

  6. Not every confrontation ends in a shootout

Rapporté· Rockstar North demo; An Extended Look

    Sources : IGN · IGN (2) · IGN (3) · Kotaku

  7. Unscripted moments on the street

Rapporté· Rockstar North demo (El País, IGN)

Previews describe a world that creates its own situations. Only El País reports one it watched: a handcuffed woman smashed her way out of a police car, an officer’s taser hit his partner instead of her, and she vanished into the crowd. El País also saw passers-by come up to flirt, try to rob the player or pass on a tip about a stash or a gang hideout. IGN describes random encounters such as a lawyer in a dumpster who swaps legal advice for pills, and Nelson told IGN that Jason once suggested a job as they drove past a car park, a line Nelson had not heard before.

  8. Rockstar’s most varied population yet

    Sources : Dazed · Shacknews · Destructoid · IGN · Game Informer

Push Square and Digital Foundry both point to very crowded spaces in An Extended Look: Push Square highlights a packed nightclub Jason squeezes through, and Digital Foundry mentions big crowds in clubs and on beaches. Digital Foundry sees signs of believable pathfinding, varied reactions and people who keep existing as they move in and out of your surroundings, but warns that curated footage cannot show how crowds cope when chaos breaks out. Nelson told IGN that the density of traffic and people, and the detail of their responses to you, can come as a shock.

Sources : Push Square · Digital Foundry · IGN

  11. Your Criminal Profile may change how the world treats you

De Rockstar· Rockstar North demo and interviews, reported by IGN; An Extended Look

The Criminal Profile, which IGN calls GTA 6’s take on Red Dead Redemption 2’s Honor system, tracks patterns in how you play. Nelson told IGN there is no correct way to play, but that “consistent actions may have an impact” on the world’s response to you and on how the story unfolds. He said robberies, what missions require and self-defence are fair game; it is consistently going beyond what is necessary that shifts the profile. IGN saw binning rubbish help, and says Nelson named feeding animals as another way.

  12. Your partner as an AI companion

Rapporté· Rockstar North demo (IGN, El País)

When you play as one of the pair, you can call or text the other to come and join you, according to IGN. In a police search you can tell your partner to run while you take the heat, and if you are separated they text once the coast is clear; IGN’s preview adds that if one gets into trouble with a stranger, the other backs them up. El País says the partner you are not controlling can guard hostages during a robbery.

Much of Trailer 1 is made of in-world social media posts: vertical videos and a livestream with a scrolling comment feed, as GamesRadar+ and PC Gamer catalogued. Dazed confirms working social feeds on the phone, and IGN reports that you can browse and follow accounts on Snapmatic but cannot post your own photos, because Jason and Lucia want to avoid a digital trail.

  14. Where the NPC interaction system came from

Only GamesRadar+ reports this, relaying a YouTube video by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier after his visit to Rockstar. Schreier says vice president of animation Mark Tennant built a prototype around 2014 or 2015 that let the aim button greet or antagonise people instead of pointing a gun, and that technical lead Phil Hooker at first wanted to keep it from Nelson because of the extra work it would bring. Nelson reportedly loved it once he saw it; the system shipped in Red Dead Redemption 2, and Nelson told IGN it returns in GTA 6 in an evolved form.

Animaux

  1. Predators stalking prey

De Rockstar· Only in Leonida page (official images and their descriptions)

Rockstar’s own description of one Mount Kalaga image reads: “A cougar stalks a herd of deer drinking from a stream in Mount Kalaga National Park.” Its Grassrivers text warns of “far deadlier predators” than the gators among the mangroves, and other official images show alligators around an airboat and in a swamp during a police chase. Rockstar has not explained how far animals hunt, flee or attack on their own during play.

  3. Plus de 170 espèces animales

Rapporté· Couverture de Game Informer (septembre 2026), rapportée par VGC

VGC, reporting on Game Informer’s cover story, says Rockstar puts Leonida’s wildlife at more than 170 species, including 60 kinds of bird, 30 land mammals and sea life such as sharks, whales and jellyfish. Game Informer’s own article is behind a paywall, so this rests on VGC’s account.

  4. Wildlife in the official footage

  5. Petting dogs, and feeding animals

  6. Studying animals, at the zoo or in the wild

Rapporté· Rockstar North demo; An Extended Look

  1. Take-Two: generative AI has “zero part” in GTA 6

De Rockstar· Interview de GamesIndustry.biz, 3 février 2026 ; couverture de Game Informer (septembre 2026)

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz in February 2026: “Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building.” He said Rockstar’s worlds are handcrafted, built up one street and neighbourhood at a time, and are not procedurally generated. Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut separately told Game Informer, as reported by VGC, that Leonida has “a hand-crafted quality to every bit”.

    Sources : GamesIndustry.biz · Insider Gaming · 80 Level · Video Games Chronicle

  2. Rockstar’s Rob Nelson reportedly also said no generative AI

    Sources : GamesRadar+ · ComicBook

  3. Take-Two does use AI and machine learning

  4. What Take-Two’s annual report says about AI

    De Rockstar· Formulaire 10-K, déposé le 22 mai 2026

Take-Two’s annual report for the year to March 31, 2026, filed with the SEC on May 22, 2026, says the company is investing in AI tools and technologies, partly to enhance gameplay. The same filing lists AI as a business risk, citing possible regulatory scrutiny, lawsuits, copyright claims, reputational harm and negative user views of automation and AI. It does not tie AI to GTA 6.

Sources : Take-Two Interactive (SEC filing)

  5. Zelnick: AI makes assets, not hits

De Rockstar· The Game Business (March 2026); Business Insider (May 2026)

On November 7, 2023, speaking at the Paley International Council Summit, Zelnick said NPC interactions are scripted and the characters “generally not very interesting”, and that with AI “you could imagine all the NPCs becoming really interesting and fun”, as reported by VGC. He was talking about the industry in general and would not say whether GTA 6 would use generative AI. His February 2026 statement that generative AI has no part in GTA 6 is the later, more specific answer.

    Sources : Video Games Chronicle · GamesIndustry.biz

De Rockstar· Rockstar North interview, reported by IGN; Dazed feature

Nelson told IGN that believable interactions take a great deal of work in design, coded behaviours, animation and writing, and that those teams had to “become students of human behavior”, watching how real people act and how conversations rise and fall. Dazed reports a dedicated Rockstar research team embedded in Miami. Rockstar has not said that any of this behaviour comes from generative AI.

  8. Over 600,000 animations

Rapporté· Rockstar to The New York Times (August 2026), reported by GamesRadar+

Rockstar told The New York Times that GTA 6 contains more than 600,000 NPC animations, against 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, according to GamesRadar+. ComicBook’s round-up of the previews gives the same 600,000-plus figure for the game as a whole. We could not open the Times article itself, and Rockstar has not explained how the animations are counted.

    Sources : GamesRadar+ · ComicBook

  9. Des animations adaptées à chaque morphologie

    Rapporté· Rockstar North demo

Only IGN reports this: because NPC bodies now vary far more in shape and height, the game retargets animations on the fly so that people of different sizes interact believably with their surroundings and each other. Rockstar has not explained how the system works.

    Rapporté· US patent record

US patent 11,620,781, filed in October 2020 and granted to Take-Two in April 2023, describes building character movement from small, data-driven animation blocks that can change style for conditions such as rain, tiredness or injury, rather than making a separate animation set for every state. Push Square and GGRecon connected it to GTA 6 in October 2023; GGRecon says its first-named inventor, Tobias Kleanthous, is a former lead AI and gameplay programmer at Rockstar. The patent names no game, and 80 Level later stressed that such patents prove nothing about what ships.

  11. PNJ chatbots dotés d’IA dans GTA 6

    Non confirmé

This is not confirmed, and there is no evidence for it: neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has said GTA 6’s pedestrians hold AI-generated conversations. Take-Two’s CEO has said generative AI has “zero part” in the game, Nelson reportedly said no generative AI was used, and IGN says Rockstar had a team in LA writing NPC dialogue. Treat claims of ChatGPT-style NPCs as speculation.

    Sources : GamesIndustry.biz · GamesRadar+ · IGN

Rapporté· Virgin Radio UK and Lex Fridman podcast interviews, late 2025

Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser compared AI to mad cow disease on Virgin Radio UK in late 2025, arguing that models trained on AI-made content will end up feeding on themselves, as PC Gamer and 80 Level reported. Weeks earlier, on Lex Fridman’s podcast, he said he was “less scared than a lot of people” and that AI could be a great tool if used well but would produce generic work if used to replace creativity. Houser left Rockstar in March 2020, so his views do not speak for the studio or for GTA 6.

  • Whether individual NPCs, such as shopkeepers you have robbed, recognise you later, beyond the police heat system.
  • What changes at each Wanted level, especially five and six stars, and how police tactics escalate.
  • Whether bystanders’ phone videos or social media posts feed into the Wanted system or the Criminal Profile.
  • Whether gangs hold territory, react to you as groups, or fight each other in the open world.
  • Whether the 600,000-animation figure covers NPCs only or the whole game; GamesRadar+ and ComicBook describe it differently, and the New York Times original could not be checked.
  • Which, if any, GTA 6 systems use machine learning; Take-Two has only spoken about AI use in general terms.
  • Whether the Take-Two navigation and locomotion patents, or physics middleware such as Euphoria, are used in GTA 6.

FAQ

GTA 6 utilise-t-il l’IA ?

Not generative AI, according to Take-Two: CEO Strauss Zelnick said in February 2026 that it has “zero part” in what Rockstar is making, and Rockstar’s Rob Nelson reportedly gave the same answer in August. Nelson credits the pedestrians’ behaviour to Rockstar’s design, code, animation and writing teams. Zelnick says Take-Two has long used machine learning across its games but has not said where, if anywhere, it appears in GTA 6.

There is no evidence of it. Take-Two’s CEO says generative AI has no part in GTA 6, Rob Nelson reportedly said none was used, and IGN says Rockstar had a team in Los Angeles writing NPC dialogue, so treat claims of AI chatbot pedestrians as unconfirmed speculation.

Les PNJ de GTA 6 sont-ils intelligents ?

More reactive than before, by Rockstar’s account: Nelson says people notice eavesdroppers and followers, move away when you hold a gun, and may carry weapons and act on impulses of their own, and El País saw passers-by flirt, try to rob the player and offer tips. All of this comes from footage and demos that Rockstar controlled, and Digital Foundry cautions that curated footage cannot show how crowds handle real chaos.

La police se souvient-elle de vous dans GTA 6 ?

Yes, more than before: Nelson says Rockstar gave police “a bit more persistent memory”, and icons under the Wanted stars show whether they know your face, clothes, vehicle or that you are a couple. IGN reports that a crime scene stays a hot area police keep searching, and that a full outfit change, a different car or splitting up helps you shake them; how long a description lasts has not been explained.

Rob Nelson says a crime is only reported if someone witnesses it or an alarm goes off, and outlets that saw An Extended Look and Rockstar’s demo say the meter now goes up to six stars. Heat icons show what police know about you, IGN says the stars are hollow while police have no description, and Nelson says that at three stars in the city, escaping on foot through alleys is often the best option.

Yes, as far as the footage shows: GamesRadar+ and Push Square both saw the Wanted meter reach six stars in An Extended Look, and IGN and El País report the same from Rockstar’s demo. Rockstar has not explained what each star level brings.

No. Nelson says police no longer appear on the radar during a chase and instead show up when you use the new Focus view, a change Push Square also spotted in An Extended Look.

Les PNJ réagissent-ils si vous portez une arme dans GTA 6 ?

Yes, according to Rockstar: Rob Nelson said people react and move away when you have a gun in your hand, unlike in GTA 5, though a long gun on your back should be fine and you can always carry two concealed handguns. How quickly police step in has not been detailed.

Peut-on parler aux PNJ dans GTA 6 ?

Yes. With your gun away, holding the left trigger brings up interaction options, a system carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2 and seen in An Extended Look; previews say the options include greet, taunt, defuse and provoke.

Les PNJ se défendent-ils dans GTA 6 ?

Yes, in the footage and previews so far: Dexerto and GamesRadar+ note shopkeepers and bystanders fighting back during robberies, and Rob Nelson says other people in Leonida carry weapons and act on impulses of their own.

Reportedly more than 600,000. GamesRadar+ says Rockstar gave The New York Times that figure for NPC animations, against 55,000 in GTA 5 and 300,000 in Red Dead Redemption 2, and ComicBook’s preview round-up cites the same number; Rockstar has not published it on its own channels.

Rockstar’s own images show a cougar stalking deer and alligators in the Grassrivers, outlets have spotted manatees, dolphins and more in the footage, and VGC, citing Game Informer, reports more than 170 species. Rockstar has not explained how animals behave, whether they attack, or how hunting works.

Take-Two holds patents credited to Rockstar staff on NPC vehicle navigation and on character movement, and outlets have linked them to GTA 6. The patents name no game, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has said GTA 6 uses them.

Les PNJ vous filment-ils et publient-ils en ligne dans GTA 6 ?

Not confirmed. The trailers are full of in-world social media clips and the phone has working feeds, but nothing from Rockstar or the previews says bystanders’ phone videos affect the police or your reputation; IGN raised the idea only as speculation.
