Car theft and trackers in GTA 6
What is reported about stealing cars: trackers that call the police, the Waink scanner, tools for pricier cars, fences, registering a car and the impound lot.
32 facts, 0 straight from Rockstar · Checked
Rockstar has not described vehicle trackers on its own site or Newswire, but Rob Nelson of Rockstar North explained them while playing a July 2026 demo for press and creators, with previews published from August 27 and IGN’s full transcript on October 7. As reported, some stolen cars, especially pricier ones, carry trackers that tell the police where you are if you drive too slowly; the Waink phone app shows whether a car is tracked, and the only reported way to remove a tracker is through a car fence later in the game. Car theft is now tiered (slim jim, key cloner, carjacking), the police can learn which car you’re in, and a stolen car must be registered for a fee to keep. Licence-plate tracking, tracker jammers and the number of tracker tiers are not confirmed.
Trackers
Explained by Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson while playing a press demo. Rockstar’s own site has not described them.
Some cars are fitted with trackers
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Trackers are one layer of car security in GTA 6, alongside locks and alarms, according to previews of Rockstar’s July 2026 demo. IGN, Kotaku and El País all list trackers among the things a car can have, IGN’s summary of Game Informer’s September cover story says higher-end cars may carry them, and Famitsu quotes Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson saying a luxury car is very likely to have both an alarm and a high-performance tracker. IGN’s preview calls it an advanced GPS tracking system. Rockstar has not mentioned trackers on its own website or in its Newswire posts up to the October 15 Launch Trailer.

Advanced trackers: keep your speed up or the police find you
Reported· Rockstar North press demo (IGN transcript, October 7, 2026; Famitsu, August 28, 2026)
In the demo transcript IGN published on October 7, Nelson says a car with an advanced tracker is marked by a blinking red light at the bottom of the screen, and that the police will know where the car is if he isn’t driving fast enough. Later, in a car taken from a police impound, he says that if he drives slowly “it pings” and the police will know where he is, so you have to drive fast. IGN’s preview likens this to the film Speed, and Famitsu’s account says the tracker sends out a signal after a spell of slow driving. No outlet has published the speed or the time limit.
Tracker tiers and a warning beep
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE and Game Rant)
Trackers reportedly come in more than one grade. Famitsu quotes Nelson saying some cars that are not top-end have an alarm but only a standard tracker, while luxury cars are likely to have a high-performance one, and TGG’s notes quote Nelson showing him an expensive car with “an alarm on it and a standard tracker.” TGG says the Waink scan shows a car’s tracker tier, and that higher-tier trackers stay quiet while you drive fast, start beeping when you slow down and report your position if you stay slow too long; VICE and Game Rant repeat this. Nobody has said how many tiers there are.

Which cars have trackers
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
No list of tracked models has been published. The pattern in the previews is that pricier cars are more likely to be tracked: Famitsu says the prestige cars that need a key cloner are very likely to carry an alarm and a high-performance tracker, while some less fancy cars have an alarm and a standard tracker, and IGN’s summary of Game Informer’s cover story says higher-end cars may have trackers. Kotaku, citing Nelson’s comments to TGG, warns that a fancy car you carjack at a junction may still have a tracker even though you needed no tool to take it. ComicBook’s round-up of Kinda Funny’s preview says some of the more expensive cars have trackers, and only TGG’s notes, repeated by VICE, say every police car has one.

Waink: scan a car for a tracker before you steal it
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Nelson told IGN that the phone now has a scanner you hold over a car; in his example it said the car was locked, had an alarm and had “no tracker”, and it also gave the car’s value at a Pay n’ Spray or at a specialist car fence, plus the cost of registering it. IGN identified the app as Waink from a brief glimpse in the demo, and Kotaku, GamesRadar+, VICE, TGG and IGN’s summary of Game Informer’s cover story also report it; GamesRadar+ and TGG add that it tells you which theft tool you need, and TGG that it shows the tracker tier. ComicBook’s round-up of Kinda Funny’s preview says the app also shows how fast you have to drive to shake the tracker. Rockstar has not printed the name itself, and outlets spell it Waink (IGN’s interview, Kotaku, VICE, TGG), WAINK (IGN’s details list) or WAiNK (GamesRadar+, IGN’s Game Informer summary).

What happens if you keep or ditch a tracked car
Reported· Rockstar North press demo (IGN, Famitsu, TGG)
If you keep driving a tracked car slowly, the previews say the tracker gives the police your location. In the demo, Nelson took a car with an advanced tracker and chose to get out; he explained that the hollow white stars meant the police did not know who the couple were, and that officers were heading to the spot where the car had been stolen (IGN transcript). Famitsu adds that the car could not be sold yet, so it was left behind, and that through binoculars the police could be seen heading straight for it; Nelson said the sensible call was to leave rather than go back. TGG’s notes describe the same problem: Nelson could not keep a car he liked because he had not yet unlocked tracker removal through jobs for fences. IGN sums up the choice as speeding up or abandoning the car.

Removing a tracker: car fences, later in the story
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE)
No preview describes a way to pull a tracker out yourself. Famitsu quotes Nelson saying some stolen cars can’t be sold straight away, but that a car fence able to remove trackers turns up eventually, so selling luxury cars takes several steps. TGG, whose notes VICE repeats, says tracker removal and registration are unlocked by doing work for car fences, and that Nelson could not keep a car in the demo for that reason. What removal costs, and how far into the story it opens up, has not been reported.

Tracker jammers, DIY removal or a LoJack-style brand
Unconfirmed
Not confirmed. No Rockstar statement or credible preview we found mentions a device for jamming or disabling a tracker, a way to rip one out yourself, or an in-game tracking company in the style of LoJack. The only reported route to a tracker-free stolen car is a car fence later in the game; otherwise the previews say you drive fast or abandon the car.

Stealing a car
Older cars: slim jim or smash the window
Seen in footage· An Extended Look (August 27, 2026)
An Extended Look shows Jason at a parked car with two prompts: smash the window as in older games, or use a slim jim through a short thumbstick minigame (GamesRadar+, PC Gamer, TheGamer, Kotaku). IGN reports the slim jim is the tool for older, less secure cars. Famitsu, TGG and VICE add that breaking a window can set off the car’s alarm and bring the police.

Prestige cars need a key cloner
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
IGN reports that modern prestige cars need a technologically advanced key cloner, a tool you only get later in the story; Famitsu’s wording puts it in the latter part of the game. Kotaku, quoting Nelson’s interview with TGG, says you can smash the window of such a car and climb in, but it won’t start without the cloner. Famitsu describes the cloner as a device that copies a car’s electronic key data, and Nelson told TGG that with one you can get in and start the car without setting off the alarm. We found no outlet describing the key cloner in Rockstar’s public footage.

Security tiers and unlocking theft tools
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Nelson told IGN that Rockstar put “layers of stratification” into vehicles: instead of one button to hotwire anything, some parked cars are off limits at the start until you acquire the right tools. Famitsu says every vehicle follows this staged system, so you work up to stealing and selling luxury cars. TGG says the tools unlock through work for fences, quoting Nelson that even the slim jim he used in the demo had been unlocked by that point, and VICE repeats this. El País lists lock picks and hacking with the phone among the tools it saw; only El País mentions hacking.

Carjacking a driver still works
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Nelson told IGN that any driver can still be carjacked, with no tool needed. Famitsu adds that you can sometimes just shout at a driver to get out, though some refuse or even shoot at you, and shooting back affects your Criminal Profile. TGG’s notes say pulling a driver out now involves a quick-time prompt, and a passenger may fight you too. Kotaku points out the catch: a carjacked luxury car may still carry a tracker the police can use to find you.

Places where you can’t steal cars
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu)
Only Famitsu reports this. Nelson told Famitsu that the areas around safehouses are safe zones and some story locations are protected, so cars can’t be stolen there. His example was a strip club Jason visits with a friend: Famitsu’s text calls it the club of Jason’s friend Dre’Quan, and Nelson said stealing cars outside it would be bad for business. Rockstar’s own profiles call the strip club Boobie Ike’s, with Dre’Quan booking acts there, so Famitsu’s wording about who owns it may be loose.

Stealing from a police impound lot
Reported· Rockstar North press demo (IGN)
In the demo, Jason pointed out a police impound as the couple drove past. Nelson explained that a car fence had told them about the lot, given them the door code and asked for a car inside, which he thought looked like an Infernus; he sneaked in, drove it out, and noted it had an advanced tracker so he had to drive fast (IGN transcript). IGN, Dexerto and VICE all report that car fences can tip you off about cars sitting in impound lots.
The police and stolen cars
How the police find out about a stolen car
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Nelson told IGN that a crime has to be witnessed, or set off an alarm, before it is reported to the police. TGG says Nelson listed a stolen car’s tracker as another way, because it reports itself, and VICE repeats this. Famitsu quotes Nelson saying an NPC may phone the police to say their car has been stolen, and that hearing dispatch radio about a suspect fleeing in that vehicle is your cue to worry. Smashing a window can also set off the car alarm (Famitsu, TGG, VICE).

Police can know which car you’re in
Seen in footage· An Extended Look (August 27, 2026); Rockstar North demo
In An Extended Look, icons under the wanted stars show what the police know, including the car; after the crew switch vehicles the car icon disappears and a police car drives past without recognising them (GamesRadar+). Beebom lists the vehicle icon among those shown in An Extended Look, and TheGamer, Engadget and GamesRadar+ all describe the crew torching the getaway car and moving into a van. Nelson told IGN the icons showed the police knew what they were driving, so they should jump out of the car, and IGN’s details list says switching to a different car is one way to reduce heat.

A reported car stays “hot”
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); TGG creator preview (via GamesRadar+)
GamesRadar+, summarising TGG’s deep-dive, reports that police can still recognise your clothes or vehicle after you break line of sight, even once the stars are gone, unless you deal with them; Nelson says Rockstar wanted police to have “a bit more persistent memory.” Famitsu quotes Nelson saying that leaving the search area ends the chase, but getting back into a vehicle that has been reported still risks being spotted. Nelson also told Famitsu that at around two stars you can steal a beat-up car the police don’t know about and drive carefully to slip away.

Pay ’n’ Spray: repair, respray and lose the heat
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE)
Famitsu quotes Nelson saying a Pay ’n’ Spray can repair a car and respray it to escape heat, though it only changes the colour; fancier paint needs a tuning shop. TGG’s notes say the same: Pay ’n’ Sprays are kept simple, with repairs and a few basic colours, and are there to clear the vehicle heat icon; VICE repeats this. Famitsu adds that Pay ’n’ Spray also buys cars, but after you sell one there you can’t bring another to the same shop for a while. TGG quotes Nelson saying car fences and Pay ’n’ Sprays are not necessarily open to you at the start of the game.

Police cars have trackers
Reported· TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE)
Only TGG’s preview notes report this, and VICE repeats them: every police car carries a tracker, so escaping in a stolen cruiser is close to impossible. The same notes say police cars hold a shotgun or assault rifle in the trunk, often with body armour, which you can loot. Rockstar has not said this, and no other outlet we checked repeats it.

Police reading licence plates, or swapping plates
Unconfirmed
Not confirmed. No Rockstar statement and no credible preview or footage breakdown we found says GTA 6 police track number plates, or that you can swap, fake or re-register plates. What has been reported is that police can know which car you are in, shown by an icon, and that switching cars or a Pay ’n’ Spray respray helps. Claims about plate tracking come from leak coverage, rumour sites and fan guides, not from official or credible reporting.

Keeping, selling and impounds
Registering a stolen car as your own
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
Nelson told IGN the scanner shows how much it would cost him to register a car for himself, and Famitsu’s version of the interview ties that fee to the Pay ’n’ Spray. Kotaku says a stolen car isn’t yours until you register it and keep it in a garage. TGG’s notes, repeated by VICE and Game Rant, say street cars can be registered for a fee but high-end cars can’t be registered early in the game, and that registration options unlock through work for car fences; Gfinity says registering a high-end car takes time. Actual prices have not been reported.

Unregistered stolen cars don’t last
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); Nelson to TGG (via Kotaku)
Famitsu quotes Nelson saying a stolen car shows as a grey icon on the radar and stays around for a while, but is gone when you restart the game, much like the temporary horses in Red Dead Redemption 2. Kotaku reports the same: unless you register and garage it, a stolen car vanishes when you reboot.
Garage space: three cars to start
Reported· Rockstar North demo (Famitsu); TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE)
Famitsu quotes Nelson saying you start with space for three personal vehicles and can buy garages around the map to own more; with every space full, you sell one to make room. TGG quotes Nelson’s example of buying a storage garage for “a few thousand bucks” and stashing a stolen $50,000 car there, where it is safe even before you can register it, and VICE repeats the point. TGG adds that you can buy garages but not safehouses.

Your own car can be impounded
Reported· Kinda Funny preview (via ComicBook); TGG’s preview notes (his own post, repeated by VICE)
ComicBook’s round-up of Kinda Funny’s preview says a registered car can be impounded if the police find it abandoned after a crime. TGG quotes Nelson explaining that if you leave your car while the police are after you and they know it is yours, officers stay near it, so you can try to sneak back for it; leave it too long and they impound it. VICE repeats this from TGG’s notes.

Getting an impounded car back
Reported· Nelson to TGG (TGG’s preview notes, repeated by VICE)
Nelson told TGG that you can always get your own car back through Scooter Bros for “not too much money”, but once the police have impounded it, getting it out costs more, or you can steal it back from the impound. VICE’s summary of TGG’s notes says the same. No prices have been reported, and Rockstar has not described the process on its own site.

Selling stolen cars: fences and Pay ’n’ Spray
Reported· Rockstar North press demo, July 2026 (previews published from August 27, 2026)
The scanner shows what a car is worth at a Pay ’n’ Spray or a specialty car fence (IGN), and a fence pays less for a damaged car; Nelson pointed out he could repair the impound car before delivering it for that reason. Famitsu says some cars can’t be sold right away, which in the demo meant abandoning a tracked car, and its Japanese text names one car fence ランディ, which reads as Randy; only Famitsu reports the name, and no English-language source has confirmed the spelling. VICE and Game Rant report that fences specialise in cars, drugs or jewellery and unlock as the story goes on, and IGN’s summary of Game Informer’s cover story also says stolen cars go to a fence.

Calling your personal car to you
Reported· Rockstar North press demo (IGN, Famitsu); TGG’s preview notes
Nelson told IGN your personal vehicle can be summoned whenever you like, and that guns you have bought are always available in the back of it. Famitsu names the app that does this, Scooter Bros, and TGG, VICE and Game Rant also list it; ComicBook’s round-up of Kinda Funny’s preview says cars you have bought can be called with an app. TGG quotes Nelson saying recovering your own car this way costs “not too much money”.

Tow trucks
Seen in footage· An Extended Look (August 27, 2026)
A tow truck drives past in An Extended Look while Jason picks how to break into a car (GamesRadar+), and Jalopnik spots a pink supercar being towed in a street-fight shot. GamesRadar+ also lists a tow truck in one of Trailer 1’s social-media clips, and wonders whether vehicle recovery missions could return, but Rockstar has not announced towing jobs or said whether tow trucks take cars to an impound.

How earlier games did it
GTA 5 and GTA Online, for comparison.
Earlier games: police knew your car, Pay ’n’ Spray cleared it
Reported
IGN’s wanted-system explainer notes that police in earlier GTA games could already recognise your vehicle, and that a quick stop at a Pay ’n’ Spray was the fast way to lose the heat. GTA 6 extends that idea to the characters’ faces and clothes.

GTA Online: a tracker and insurance on your own car
Reported
In GTA Online, a tracker was part of owning a personal car rather than a risk on cars you steal. Only Gamepressure, among the sources we could load, explains it: its 2022 guide says a car needs a tracker and insurance before Mors Mutual Insurance will replace it after it is destroyed, and that both can be fitted at Los Santos Customs or in your garage.
Sources: Gamepressure
GTA Online: police impound
Reported
Sportskeeda and Gamepressure explain that in GTA Online your personal car can be impounded by the police. Sportskeeda says this can happen if you are killed by police in or near it, and that you can pay a $250 fine at the gate of the Los Santos impound or break in and take it, which earns a wanted level; Gamepressure describes the same two options without a price. Sportskeeda adds that Executive Office owners can pay an assistant $1,000 to fetch it.

FAQ
Do cars have trackers in GTA 6?
Some do, according to previews of Rockstar’s July 2026 demo from IGN, Famitsu, Kotaku and El País, and IGN’s summary of Game Informer’s cover story. Pricier cars are the most likely to have one; Rockstar has not described the system on its own site.
How do you remove a tracker in GTA 6?
Not by yourself, as far as anyone has reported: Famitsu and TGG say a car fence can remove trackers once you have progressed far enough, and in the demo Nelson had to give up a tracked car because he had not unlocked that yet. Until then the previews say you keep the car moving fast or abandon it.
Can police track your car in GTA 6?
Reportedly yes, in two ways. A car with an advanced tracker tells the police where it is if you drive too slowly, and separately the police can learn which car you’re in, shown by an icon under your wanted level in An Extended Look; switching cars removes that icon.
How do you know if a car has a tracker in GTA 6?
Rob Nelson told IGN that a phone scanner, which IGN identifies as the Waink app, tells you whether a parked car is locked, alarmed or tracked before you take it. Once you are inside a car with an advanced tracker, a red light blinks at the bottom of the screen, according to IGN’s demo transcript.
What happens if you drive a tracked car slowly in GTA 6?
Per Nelson’s demo, the tracker pings and the police learn where the car is. TGG, repeated by VICE, says higher-tier trackers beep as a warning before they report you; the exact speed and time limits have not been given.
Which cars have trackers in GTA 6?
There is no published list. Previews say prestige cars that need a key cloner are the most likely to carry an advanced tracker, and only TGG’s notes, repeated by VICE, say every police car has one.
How do you steal expensive cars in GTA 6?
According to IGN, parked prestige cars need a key cloner that you only get later in the story, while older cars open with a slim jim. You can still carjack anyone who is driving, but Kotaku notes the car may have a tracker.
Can you keep stolen cars in GTA 6?
Reportedly yes, by paying to register them, and you start with room for three personal vehicles. Unregistered stolen cars disappear when you restart the game, and TGG’s notes, repeated by VICE, say high-end cars can’t be registered early on.
Can your car get impounded in GTA 6?
Reportedly yes: Kinda Funny’s preview, via ComicBook, and Nelson’s comments to TGG say a car you abandon after a crime can end up impounded. Nelson told TGG that getting it out then costs more than a normal recovery, or you can steal it back; no prices have been given.
Do police track license plates in GTA 6?
Not confirmed. The previews describe police knowing which car you’re driving, but no official or credible source says number plates are read, swapped or faked.
Does Pay ’n’ Spray get rid of the cops in GTA 6?
Reportedly it clears the heat on your car: Famitsu quotes Rob Nelson saying a respray there helps you escape heat, and TGG’s notes, repeated by VICE, say clearing the vehicle heat icon is its job. It only changes the colour, and it may not be open to you at the start of the game.
Did GTA 5 have car trackers?
Not in the same way. In GTA Online a tracker, along with insurance, was something you fitted to your own personal car so it could be recovered, according to Gamepressure; GTA 6’s trackers are reported as anti-theft devices on cars you steal.
