GTA 6 vs GTA 4: physics, story, tone and map
GTA 6 is built more like GTA 5, with switchable leads and a far bigger map, but borrows some of GTA IV’s feel: Rockstar’s Rob Nelson says the driving keeps some of GTA 4’s weight, and IGN reports six-star wanted levels are back.

Is GTA 6 more like GTA 4 or GTA 5?
A bit of both, going by Rockstar and the previews. Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told YouTuber TGG the team kept “some of the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4” along with “the accessibility of GTA 5”, GamingBolt reported. IGN also reports the wanted meter goes back up to six stars, GTA IV’s cap before GTA 5 cut it to five.
The structure leans toward GTA 5. In the 2008 game you played as Niko alone from start to finish. In GTA 6, IGN says you can swap between Jason and Lucia at any time while exploring, although switching may be turned off at some points in the story. So, in our view, the shape is GTA 5’s, with some of GTA IV’s feel layered on top, at least on paper.
Will GTA 6 have GTA 4’s Euphoria physics?
Rockstar hasn’t said. GTA IV was the first commercially released game to use NaturalMotion’s Euphoria, which builds a character’s reactions in real time rather than playing back predefined animations, and NaturalMotion engineers spent months at Rockstar North fitting it in. Rockstar later used it in Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
For GTA 6, all we have is footage. Digital Foundry wrote that rigid body physics and destructible props in An Extended Look “look rich”, but added that because the video is curated, how far its simulation really reaches “remains unproven”. The physics Rockstar has talked about most is the driving: Nelson says the model was built from scratch for current hardware, with finer control over the drivetrain, tires, suspension and steering. The previews were hands-off, as GamingBolt notes, so how heavy it feels is still open. Our GTA 6 physics page tracks what has been shown.
Is GTA 6 darker than GTA 4?
Nobody can say until the story is out, but they’re pitched differently. IGN’s 2008 review saw GTA IV’s darker story as a departure for the series. In LOVE magazine, Rockstar’s Rupert Humphries called GTA IV “an immigrant’s story” meant as “a kind of hollow commentary on the illusion of America as a land of opportunity”, which he says GTA V then doubled down on. He also linked GTA IV’s Homeland Security themes to its post-9/11 New York setting.
GTA 6 is sold as “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America”, but Humphries describes a world that is “gritty, but also overblown”, where a present-day setting has to be “more over the top”. IGN reports the satire won’t lean on specific political issues or memes, so it doesn’t date quickly. For us, the trailers sit closer to GTA 5’s loud satire than to GTA IV’s gloom, but no trailer can settle how dark the story gets.
How does Niko’s story compare with Jason and Lucia’s?
GTA IV followed one man. Niko Bellic, an Eastern European war veteran, came to Liberty City by cargo ship to escape his criminal past, found that his cousin Roman’s stories of success were exaggerated, and went looking for the man who betrayed his unit ten years earlier. Choices shaped the story, and a late deal-or-revenge decision picked one of two endings. Our GTA IV page has the full rundown.
GTA 6 is a two-hander. Rockstar’s setup drops Jason and Lucia into a criminal conspiracy after “an easy score goes wrong”, and Humphries calls it a “Bonnie and Clyde-style” story about young people who aren’t yet jaded. IGN reports story choices big and small, with minor ones adding up and the story built for replays. The American Dream still hangs over it: Humphries suggests that today it may be as modest as a family home and paid-off loans. We go deeper in Jason and Lucia vs earlier GTA protagonists.
Is the GTA 6 map bigger than GTA 4’s?
Yes, by a long way. GTA IV’s Liberty City was a compact New York: Broker, Dukes, Bohan and Algonquin stood in for Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan, with Alderney as New Jersey. The map was roughly three times the size of GTA III’s but smaller than San Andreas, and the developers felt its height, building count and detail made up for that.
GTA 6’s Leonida is a whole state with six regions, from Vice City to Mount Kalaga. Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut called it the studio’s biggest map “by some degree” and described it as twice the size of GTA 5’s, VGC reports. GTA 5’s own map was already bigger than GTA IV, San Andreas and Red Dead Redemption combined, interiors included, VideoGamer reported from Game Informer’s 2012 reveal. Rockstar hasn’t given a square-mile figure. IGN adds that GTA 6’s narrower streets and denser traffic were designed for realism.
Is Liberty City in GTA 6?
As part of Lucia’s past, yes. Rockstar’s profile says the good life she’s after is one her mom has dreamed of “since their days in Liberty City”, and Rockstar game writer Alexa D’Agostino called Liberty City Lucia’s “hometown” in LOVE magazine. Push Square reported that fans spotted a Liberty City license plate in Trailer 2 and a Liberty City hat in official screenshots.
Visiting it is another matter. Push Square covered a fan theory that those details hint at a second, Liberty City map, but Rockstar hasn’t announced Liberty City as a playable area, and we don’t use leaked material to guess. Our Lucia Caminos page covers what Rockstar has said about her family.
What GTA 4 features are coming back in GTA 6?
A couple, on paper. Beyond the six-star wanted level and the driving, IGN reports that your partner texts you when you’re apart, and ignoring those messages may hurt the relationship. For us, that echoes GTA IV, where answering friends’ calls and hanging out raised their respect and unlocked favors. The parallel is ours; Rockstar hasn’t drawn it.
Dating is different: Niko booked dates online at internet cafés, while GTA 6’s romance, as IGN describes it, is Jason and Lucia’s own and optional. The GTA IV features we see asked about most, such as Euphoria-style ragdolls, heavy car deformation and a Niko cameo, are all unconfirmed. Kotaku expects some GTA IV and GTA V characters to show up, but that is a prediction, not an announcement.
İnsanların sordukları
Is GTA 6 in the same universe as GTA 4?
Very likely, though Rockstar hasn’t spelled it out. GTA IV started the series’ HD universe, and Kotaku counts GTA 6 as an HD-era game and believes a GTA Online character, Valentina, returns in An Extended Look.
Is Niko Bellic in GTA 6?
Nothing from Rockstar says so. Kotaku expects some GTA IV and GTA V characters to return in some form, but that is a guess, and we don’t use leaked material.
How do GTA 6’s graphics compare with GTA 4’s?
Digital Foundry put An Extended Look at about 1440p on PS5 with a largely stable 30fps, and saw no sign of the heavy frame-rate drops that marked GTA 4’s launch on PS3 and Xbox 360. It thinks a 60fps console mode is extremely unlikely.
Will GTA 6 have bowling like GTA 4?
Rockstar hasn’t mentioned it. The activities IGN lists so far include pool, mini golf, kayaking, the zoo, scuba diving, parachuting and the gym, and bowling isn’t among them.
Is GTA 4 the best GTA game?
That comes down to taste, but it is one of the best-reviewed games ever, with a Metascore of 98, the highest of any PS3 or Xbox 360 game. How GTA 6 compares can’t be judged until it is out on November 19, 2026.
